CHRISTUS St. Michael Diabetes Management Program

The management of diabetes is important in decreasing the incidence of complications, as well as long-term health problems. CHRISTUS St. Michael recognizes that a comprehensive Diabetes Management Program is vitally important and provides ongoing education for anyone affected by diabetes, as well as their family members and/or caregivers.

The Diabetes Support Group meets each month on the second Monday, at 6:30 p.m., and the second Tuesday, at 2:30 p.m. The meetings are held at the Glenwood Building, Suite 204, located at 1400 College Drive, Texarkana, TX.  No reservations needed—everyone is welcome. CHRISTUS St. Michael Conducts Area Study

CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System began a pilot Diabetes Management (DM) Program in May, 1996, partnering with Arkansas Blue Cross Blue Shield. Intensive diabetes management was provided to a group of approximately 16 patients identified by data from the insurer and patients' primary care physicians (PCPs). The DM Program included comprehensive diabetes education and health assessment with counseling on diet, medications, exercise, and self-monitoring of blood glucose. Blood pressures were monitored closely and foot exams were conducted on each patient seen in the monthly clinics. Measurements of Hgb Alc, lipid profiles, and microalbuminuria were also performed as recommended by the American Diabetes Association. Lab results and clinic notes on management recommendations were sent to, or discussed with, PCPs and referrals were made for eye examinations.

Due to the success of the pilot program, the CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System Diabetes Management Program was formed and made available to all eligible persons with diabetes within our community.
